Earthborne Rangers is live (Rangers of the far future)
Update: Earthborne Rangers is live on Kickstarter and the campaign will run for 20 days. You may pledge for a core set, or go all-in and order a second core set and the Legacy of the Ancestors campaign expansion.
To play the game, you will first create your character deck. On each turn, you will either play a card from your hand, or perform an action from a card on the table. Actions are powered by spending energy tokens from your resource pool, and then drawing a modifier card from the Challenge deck. The Challenge cards also define how cards on the table react (you have to check if the icon at the bottom of the Challenge card matches the text on the cards). The campaign is open-world, and you are free to explore as you please.
Our preview post below was published on July 21.
Earthborne Rangers is a cooperative customizable card game designed by Andrew Navaro, former head of studio at Fantasy Flight Games. Navaro has recently founded his own company, Earthborne Games, which aims to adopt environmentally conscious and sustainable practices in the production and distribution of their games.
Not much is known about the game yet, other than it will focus on character creation and exploration of the landscape. You will be constructing your Ranger deck according to their personality, background and specialized training. As you begin to explore new territories and complete quests, your deck will evolve and reflect the new experiences you have acquired. Even though the game is meant to be less difficult to win than Navaro's Arkham Horror LCG (he was the game's creative director) you have the option of increasing the challenge by choosing, for example, to not carry weapons with you.
In-game goals will be centered around nature protection and land conservation. The map is inspired by the Rocky National Park, but the animals living there have been mutated due to scientific experiments conducted a thousand years before. The Rangers will try to chart the wildlife and solve problems that affect both the creatures and the community.
That is all that's been revealed about the game for now. It has been scheduled to launch on Kickstarter on July 27.
Another great interview can be found here (and I thank shockaday for posting it in the "Sifting" thread on the 1PG).
For any old-fashioned folks that don't follow the newest news on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram: his e-mail newsletter has had nice updates so far.
Cool project.
Nice, thanks for the write up Athena! I don't know how you all catch these but I really appreciate the heads up. An adventure card game from the maker of Arkham Horror definitely peaks my interest.
