Update: Distilled is live on Kickstarter and the campaign will run for 23 days. You may pledge for a copy of the game, with or without the Africa & Middle East expansion, coasters, and metal coins. It is also available to order as a PnP.
Our preview post below was published on July 2.
Distilled is a 1-4 player economic game about managing your own distillery and producing the finest spirits. It will launch on Kickstarter on July 6.
Your goal in Distilled is to earn the title of Master Distiller by having the most spirit points at the end of the game. Gameplay lasts for 7 rounds, and each round consists of four phases: Market, Distill, Sell, and Age. You will first choose your distiller identity, each of which comes with a special ability and their own signature recipe which can be used once per game.
In the Market phase, players take turns purchasing recipe cubes, basic or premium ingredient and item cards, and distillery upgrade cards by spending money. The phase ends when everyone has purchased what they need and pass.
In the Distill phase, you place ingredients in your washback in order to distill a spirit. The washback requires at least one Yeast, one Water, and one Sugar basic card, plus a number of Alcohol cards equal to your Sugars. All these cards are shuffled together to make a spirit deck, and the top and bottom cards of the deck are removed and stored in your pantry. You then reveal the remaining spirit cards as the result of the distillation. If they match any of your recipes, you have learned how to make that spirit and earn the matching label.
In the Sell phase, you can sell the spirit you have distilled, as well as any spirits aging in your warehouse, to earn money and prestige. To sell a spirit, you lay out all the cards from your spirit deck, add a bottle, and count the total value of the cards and the recipe to receive the equivalent amount of money. You also gain spirit points according to the points shown on the cards.
In the Age phase, you can age spirits to enhance their flavour. To age a spirit, you place its deck face down in one of your warehouse spaces, draw the top card and place it at the bottom of the deck, and then place a barrel on top of the deck and a label on top of the barrel.
If you did not manage to sell a spirit in the current round, you may offer a tasting at your distillery, spend 4 spirit points and earn that much money. At the end of the 7th round, points are totalled up, and the player with the most is the winner.
In the solo mode, you will have to complete a set of challenge cards, working your way from the bottom of the barrel card up to the top. Among these challenges are: Distill goals (require you to distill a certain kind of spirit), Sell goals (require you to sell a specific kind of spirit), Collect goals (require you to add certain items to your personal board), and Earn goals (require you to complete an achievement). To win in the solo game, you have to complete at least one goal from each of the 5 rows, and meet and exceed the combined score of goals in the A and B categories.
I don't need another game, but what's that got to do with anything? 😄
I debated with myself for quite a while about backing this, and finally became weak and backed it - at the last second.

Only 6 hours left to back it! In the U.S. there's a not particularly popular saying, "Shit, or get off the pot." I need to make my move soon, if I'm gonna! The Master Distiller's Edition Pledge ($300/€254/C$383) is gone! Well, I couldn't justify that Pledge Level on my income, anyway, but it woulda been cool. FWIW, it's over 2800% funded, as of now.
Anyone out there goin' for it? I think I'm gonna, since one more game added to my already too large collection won't matter. 😄
As part of the Mega-Pledge ($300/€254/C$383) you get:
"Invitation to Drams with the Designer: a group whisky tasting led by Dave, recommending some of his favorite drams (virtual, unless otherwise negotiated). Note: Due to Kickstarter policy, no alcohol will be offered as a part of this reward and participants will be required to supply their own spirits."
Ah..., in lay-person's terms, what are you getting? 🤔
I downloaded the Uncompressed US Letter PnP file. 101 Pages! Shit, it'd probably cost me more for paper and ink than to back it on KS! 😄
In case ya missed it on the KS page: Wednesday, July 21st at 3pm EST, Paul Grogan of Gaming Rules! will be doing a Live Solo Play-through! He's already done a 3-Player Play-through here.
