Pulp Invasion is a 1-2 player bag building game set in a retro sci-fi universe. It is planned to launch on Kickstarter on May 5.
Like every game that bears Todd Sanders' signature, Pulp Invasion is a feast for the eyes, with cards that feature vintage pulp sci-fi literature illustrations, and custom dice. You play as a space trader and mercenary who is also a secret agent of the Intergalactic Council. Your mission is to stop the invasion of planets by three alien enemies, and you can do that by exploring the planets, finding super weapons, and employing combat, diplomatic and scientific skills.
At the beginning of the game, you take a Captain card, set your combat, diplomacy and science stats, and seed the cloth bag with a number of coloured cubes. You also prepare the Super Weapons draw deck, the Encounter draw decks, three planet cards, and three alien races. Each round is divided in two phases: the Encounter phase and the Planet Search phase.
In the Encounter phase, you choose a planet to explore, then place 4 cards from the Encounter deck in a row in front of you. If the Encounter cards show coloured cubes, you add them in the bag. To encounter these cards, you have to determine their 'engage strength' by combining their depicted values and icons. The cards will show which of your skills you have to use to defeat them, and you may also use the actions of the Captain's dice. Instead of engaging with them, you also have the option of evading by paying the required cost.
In the Planet Search phase, you draw cubes from the bag according to the chosen planet card, and apply the effects of the coloured cubes you drew. The goal of the game is to find all six super weapons before time runs out. If your stats ever go down to zero or you don't find the weapons in time, you lose.
