Our preview post for Pax Renaissance is here.
Pax Viking is a 1-6 player historical card game about taking control of Swedish regions as a Viking Jarl. It is meant to be a gateway game in the Pax line, combining elements from Pax Porfiriana and Pax Renaissance. It will launch on Kickstarter on April 7, along with the deluxe second edition of Pax Renaissance and an expansion to High Frontier 4 All*.
The game focuses on the eastward endeavors of the Vikings, that mostly involved exploration and trade. The map will feature pre-printed locations but players will also be able to add locations by playing venture cards. Some of the locations in the West will be spaces of 'powerful allies' which will give players the chance to forge alliances with other Viking leaders. Other locations will be trade centers which provide economic advantages if taken control of. Players will also have to defend their privileges and territories from their opponents.
Like in Pax Renaissance, there are multiple paths to victory. The end game is triggered by drawing an Event card that allows for a victory check. You win by gaining the most reputation points in one of the following categories: Sweden (if you unify the country under your rule), Rus (bring eastern territories under Swedish rule), Theocracy (if you expand your influence through the spread of Christianity), or Jarldom (if you stick to the old model of conquest through successful raiding).
The solo mode has been developed by Jon Manker and will be revealed during the Kickstarter.
*The expansion is High Frontier 4 All - Module 3: Conflict, and "adds space combat in a war for independence".
