It can be played any way you want! I've been playing with a 15 minute timer to add that little bit of pressure, if you run out of time you lose! You can ramp up the difficulty by decreasing time if you want or I have seen it played where instead of a total time limit you play with 1 minute per turn, which might sound like a lot of time to decide what to do with 4/5 cards but believe me when the cards are all good or all bad 1minute is gone in a flash! But as I say you don't have to play with a timer at all, you might want to make the game more difficult by adding in more "glitch" cards and start really close to the black hole and so more time to better puzzle it out might be needed!
@Athena Thematically it's supposed to represent the race against time to save your ship before you get sucked into the black hole but in gameplay terms there are other ways to make it more difficult for yourself if you want a slightly different challenge.....
Still no news on Ming Voyages, it's still sat there taunting me......
Lux Aeterna however, I rate very highly. Simple, fast paced game that takes only 15 mins to play, yet has the complexity to be different each time. Highly recommended by me........❤️
I also got Ming Voyages a mere days ago! I actually bought a bundle of second-hand games from a seller (Palavan, which I was looking for to begin with, Arkham Noir #1, and Ming Voyages). We'll play it alone together!
I would personally say "I like it", because it's a nice game, beautifully produced, with clear rules, pretty components, yet in a very tiny box and with a small footprint.
But I don't enjoy it. I couldn't finish my first play. It lasts a bit long and the Barbarians are always playing (they have one action during your turn, plus one action during their turn, and sometimes one extra action...). Only once I had an extra action myself, but it was to move the Barbarians (ugh).
That the rules are split into two books is also extremely annoying for the solo player.

Ming Voyages still sits on my shelf of shame....
I really will get around to playing it, honestly!
Meanwhile I have just ordered Lux Aeterna..... Ooops!
