Our temporary home is still disorganized from the move. But we're settling in slowly. Gaming has been next to nil since every day is organizing, elminating boxes etc... Not to mention, preparing to (finally) return to work this coming Monday. Hallelujah! I did get One Deck Dungeon to the table for a couple games late last week. But with so much going on, my mind was mush and the dice were not helping. 😆
I had to order a couple things on Amazon last Friday. So of course, it only made sense to toss a game into that order. 🤣 Especially when it's a game I've been wanting for a while, and one that's not always easy to find in stock. Freshwater Fly.
Since I was a kid I've enjoyed fishing. My Dad took me fishing alot. Mostly to creeks, shorelines etc... However my fishing preference has changed over the years. My ideal fishing now a days is either with my fly rod (still a beginner) or my regular rod, wading into the river and just "adventuring" in the water. Walking around to find those holes where the fish are hanging out. I just love that. In addition to that, I enjoy fishing from my canoe or paddle board. I love how you can quietly move on the water and squeeze into places where larger (and noisier) boats can't go. I don't enjoy sitting in a motor boat for hours and trolling around a lake anymore. I want to actively move and explore to find the fish. 😀
Freshwater Fly focuses on trout fishing. I don't often get to spots with trout. But I do enjoy fishing for trout for sure. Bass being my absolute favourite to fish for. However, as I get more into my fly fishing I hope to seek out more creeks and streams with trout.
The designer has also done another fishing game (prior to this one I believe) called Coldwater Crown. I may consider that down the road. The theme of Freshwater Fly spoke to me even more.
What excites me about this game is it does have a solo mode. Toss in the fact that fishing is relaxing as it is, having the opportunity to "fish" when I can't get out to fish will allow some more relaxing times. 😃 Uncharacteristically for me, I haven't played it yet. I know - 24hrs with the game and it's unplayed???? I'm shocked too. But there's so much going on. However, I'm confident it'll hit the table over the next few days for sure.
I did however, unbox it and begin to read through the instructions. I watched Tom Vassel's video on the game, so I had a general idea of the mechanics already. I'm really excited to play it. The theme seems to hold true throughout really well!
The components are very good quality:
- There are 4-reel (player) boards (bottom of pic).
- The cards and artwork is excellent.
- The main board is double sided (I believe for different player counts) and it's really nice to look at (especially when those fish fill up that stream)
- The punch-out components such as the flies (top right) impressed me a lot. These are thick, solid pieces you punch out. Very well done.
As I mentioned, the theme holds true throughout the game. I love how the designer involves realistic fishing aspects; reeling, drifting your fly down stream, finesse... I'm so excited to catch some fish. 😀
Derek, since you're a fisherman, that game looks really cool for ya. Actually, I don't fish (I have, though), but I find the game visually appealing. I'm lookin' forward to your assessment of it.
I guess making fly-fishing hooks can be a real art - like paintin' Minis!
Do you take offense to me referring to you as a "fisherman", instead of a "fisherperson"? PLEASE tell me the answer I wanna hear. 😄
Glad you're startin' to settle in to your new place, and will be able to return to a proper gamin' schedule soon.
