So, Z. offered to return Gate to me (probably too boring), which I gladly accepted now that an expansion is on its way. I'll play it once in a while, if only just for the artwork. The doorbell rang today - and I got handed a box that was way too big. What could it be?
He'd used A Thief's Fortune for padding! 😯 Thanks! I'm curious to try it.
And, JW, you might want to check the components for A Thief's Tale, just in case.
Gate gave me the same vibes as Dominion. And I don't like Dominion.
This is a kind of deck-building - you need to balance the means to grow your deck and the need to achieve your objectives, and to adapt that balance to where you are in the game's arc. I find it as irritating and stressful as trying to do high-precision manual work, unfortunately.
A counter-example would be tower defense games. In tower defense, defeating monsters brings you gold, and gold allows you to build more or better towers. So, I like Heroes of Tenefyr, because that's the idea: there is no "dilemma" being two seemingly opposite yet mutually dependent necessities.
