Today I picked up Shadowrift (2nd edition) on Facebook Marketplace for a sweet deal of $20!!!
Here in Canada, it retails for $65 brand new. This is the same gentleman I purchased Dungeon Roll from a few weeks back. He's had Shadowrift listed just as long, but I just couldn't bring myself to take any action (for some reason). At that time, he had it listed for $30-$35. So I'm actually glad it took me so
long to make the final decision to buy. 😁
And I am TOTALLY NOT DISAPPOINTED!!! I spent this afternoon learning and trying to save the town from the Fire Dragons... unfortunately for myself, and the town villagers... we did not. 🙄
I am so happy I made this purchase (especially for this deal!) What a great game! It plays really well solo and it's going to be a lot of fun multiplayer, as it's a co-op game.
There are several different monster factions that you can choose to battle against and work to save the town, OR it has randomizer cards that allow you to really change up how things go!
It's a really fun deck builder. The town villagers each round provide you with help to you, the hero, to gain resources, spells or coins to help purchase weapons, spells etc... to fight the monsters and/or build walls to protect the town. Every round, the town square (villagers) are refreshed (and hopefully not killed by the monsters). In addition to the town square, you have visiting travelers/villagers that either cause you problems as they enter your town, or that you can hire to help you out, which also are refreshed every round. It's a really cool balancing act between you as the hero, who has attack abilities and spells, and relying on villagers to help you gain even more defense against whatever monsters are coming at the village. You can either build all 8 walls to defend the town, or close all "Shadowrifts" which are the portals that allow the monsters to enter your world and attack your town.
The solo mode offers nice minor changes to setup and rules to allow you to (hopefully) save the town (not anytime soon for me! 😂). However, other than not having some extra minds to help you and to figure out a strategy for whatever's coming at you, the solo mode doesn't change the game too much from what I can tell.
I'm so excited to get this back to the table this long weekend! And there are a handful of expansions available as well. Oh boy!
*As a final note - When the rulebook recommends your first game you use the "Fire Dragon" Monster Faction ... I assumed it was an easier / more basic faction to fight. If that's the case, I'm in real trouble moving forward. 😆*
I just checked this one out on Boardgamegeek. Apparently there is a kickstarter in the works and you can subscribe to their thread if you want to be notified.
You got me interested! Although it appears to be a table hog...
540 cards? That should offer some replayability. 🙂
