This past weekend I (finally) had time to get something bigger to the table, and Scythe was crying out to me!
Game-1 of the night was with the extended board, Wind Gambit and two Automa opponents. I chose randomly (shuffling up my home base tokens) and played as Togawa vs Albion and the Nords.
I'm ashamed to admit, I hadn't played (at the table) since July. 😞 I was a bit nervous. That said, I also wasn't "feeling it" while I was setting up. I RARELY feel setups are tedious or unenjoyable. For some reason though, that night I was questioning myself during setup; "Should I even bother with Scythe tonight?". Why I felt this way, I have no idea. BUT two turns into game-1 that ALL WENT AWAY and I was SO PUMPED to be playing at the table again! 😁
I (still) haven't played with the Wind Gambit expansion a ton, but I do enjoy the variety it brings. You never know what your airships abilities will be and how they'll lead you to a variety of decisions throughout the game. In this game, the airships were able to transport up to 2-workers at a time, which I utilized in a few instances.
I honestly wasn't sure how I'd fair in the end with this one. It was pretty tight. Most battles were between Albion and the Nords thankfully. Their factions starting closer to each other definitely factored in, but their airships as well were creating problems with their opponents as well. I tried to do my best to creep around the perimeter of their territories as best I could, while still dipping in and out of the chaos for some resources or encounters.
In the end, I took the game by only 4-VPs!!! PHEW! 😎
Game-2 to save some setup time and to switch things up a bit, I chose to play with the modular board, keep Togawa as my faction and play just against the Nords this game. I also chose (for the first time) one of the variants that come as an option with the Wind Gambit expansion:
This was a neat, subtle variant to the usual game. It offered me another option to place a star, but to balance that option it also meant the Automa needed to place only 5 stars since they start by placing one. Yikes!
The modular board setup as you can see, did make things a bit tight to start. The Nordic faction base was not too far from mine. Also notice how the lakes ended up almost surrounding the factory, which made things interesting at times!
The modular board mixes things up so well every time. You really have to think and react differently when you play with it. As you can see, things were getting crammed after a while with just one Automa opponent. Imagine if I didn't use all 4-tiles for the board!? This game would've been even more intense.
In the end, I took the Automa down again, with a win. I was really surprised I took both games with the win since I hadn't played at the table for a while. Granted, I had played digital since July a fair bit. As always, I was reminded why I LOVE Scythe. It just makes me smile ... or is that just the glare from my mechs as the sunlight hits them?? 🤔
Game-2 was my 129th play at the table for Scythe. For my 130th, I feel like I should play against at least 3-Automa at the table to make it an epic game to celebrate. 😀
Great Post! Love them photos you provide! Seeing/reading about your gaming experiences always gives me the urge to check out my own collection again.
