This weekend, I pulled out Pandemic for some solo play for the first time since towards the start of the pandemic here in, Canada. It was so great to play this game again and be reminded of how much fun it is. I broke it out Sunday late morning, made a tea with my fresh mint on the porch and got down to business.
Pandemic really took an unintentional back seat as I purchased new games this year, kept learning new games and playing on BGA, and just sort of overlooking it for no apparent reason. Game nights have been about teaching my sister and brother-in-law all the new games I have, rather than playing something we both own.
But man is it ever still so good! I was playing with the official solo variant that they released this year, using the "Archive" and playing 3-roles (while eliminating the researcher). I was bound and determined to save the world (especially seeing as how, in 2020, it sure needs saving...).
Game 1 Result - No such luck. I'm sorry, and will shoulder the blame for the world's demise. :(
Game 2 Result - Success! 4-cures. It's all good everyone! I just needed two cracks at saving the world, is all. ;)
My wife, daughters and I then met up with my parents, sister and brother-in-law at a local conservation area for a hike. The weather was absolutely perfect! 2.5hrs later, we all said goodbye and headed home. So I did the only logical thing; Try to save the world again!!
This time....
Game 1 Result - Nope. We didn't make it.
Game 2 Result - The setup was against me from the start. I had a clump of cities in Europe that started with 3-disease cubes right from the get go. I contained it as best I could for a while, but eventually, the outbreaks were too much.
So although I only saved the world 1/4 times in one day (which is a big task to shoulder for anyone), I had a blast and was reminded how great Pandemic is! The official solo variant is a lot of fun, and simplistic too. Can't wait to play again soon.
LOL "Annihilated" is the perfect word for it. It's totally how you feel most games when you just can't save humanity! LOL
I played vanilla Pandemic for the first time this year when I bought Pandemic Legacy. I was familiar with the game through the Reign of Cthulhu edition and thought I didn't need the original. Even though I wasn't enamored with Legacy when I finished it, I very much appreciated how solid a game Pandemic is. I had also underestimated its difficulty, and got annihilated several times. 😄
