I've been slowly working my way through Gloomhaven: Jaws of the Lion. The first 5 scenarios progressively teach you the rules, and I am currently at no 4. This was the first time I actually enjoyed this game. The first three had left me feeling a bit disillusioned, especially because I had high hopes for it. I now suspect this was because the first tutorials don't have enough meat on the bones. Not much was going on, winning was easy, and the whole thing felt more like an exercise book, what with the spiral notebook in place of the map tiles.
Scenario 4 came to change my impressions, as it plays with an almost full set of rules and drives the difficulty up a notch. This notch was enough to make me lose. I was careless with the Voidwarden, and she met her death too soon in the game. Her partner the Red Guard is a strong character but he eventually succumbed to the final spawn of the Stone Golem and Zealot.
I wish I could play again tomorrow, but my work schedule doesn't allow it (as you can see, I haven't even found the time to paint the minis). Waiting for the next day off then...
Awesome Athena! Great to hear you're into JotL. Welcome to the world of Gloomhaven! I like how JoL uses the book as the map. That's a cool little twist that would cut down some setup time. Glad you're getting into it now. I'm looking forward to more posts about your adventures.
Is JotL setup like Gloomhaven where you unlock aspects of the game as you go? Or is there less surprises in that sense?
Good luck with this, Athena. I’ve had my eye on it but never bit. Glad to hear you started to enjoy it.
You have to work on Sunday? According to Christianity, it's the day of rest (I think). Are you some sort of blasphemous, sacrilegious heathen? 😄
