The other night I had a bit of time to bring something to the table before my wife and I sat down to watch our show. It was one of those nights where you're looking at your shelf, taking into account your time available to play and you just get the urge to play a particular game. That night, my Viticulture wine crate was staring at me, begging me to get a winery up and running.
The last handful of timesViticulture has come to the table, I've played the Viticulture World Expansion (which is tough). However, I knew I didn't have time for that on this particular night. Instead, I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to jump into the Viticulture solo campaign, which I've read some great things about.
The solo campaign is a challenge of 8-games / scenarios, that set you in different situations and/or limitations.
What's great about it is, it doesn't impact setup time and it's quick to read the little blurb for whichever challenge you're getting into.
Challenge #1 hits you right in the face: In this game, you play with no 'Mama' cards (now referred to as 'Red cards'). This means you start with ONLY your Grande worker available to you. Uh oh! Having said that, you get to select 3-vine cards to immediately plant in your field(s) during setup. PHEW! At least you get something good to start with.
Honestly, over the first 2/7 years (rounds) in the game, I thought I wasn't going to come out of this one. Sure it's great to have these grapes planted, but when you're short on workers to help pick them, that's not good. 🤔 Well, I surprised myself and ended up winning the scenario/challenge in my first try! 21-20. Woo!!! 🍷
Challenge #2 was last night. For this scenario, you can only EVER have 2-workers (not including your Grande worker or the 'extra' worker available one year). In addition, you don't get to use any bonus tokens this game (bonus tokens are a staple in the solo game vs the Automa). Holy corks! HOWEVER, rather than using the leftmost space in each location on the board (being the only space available to you in a 2P game), you actually use the middle space which provides the bonus or bonus action. Yay!!!!
In the end, I lost this one. Only by 2VPs. So close! I made mostly good decisions, it was the order cards that let me down. Everyone wanted white wine last night! I mean white wines are good, but they're no red! And unfortunately, I ended up having more red grapes than white in my fields to pick. 😕
What do you do when you lose a game in this campaign,
you ask??
You play that challenge/scenario again. However each time you lose, you gain a bonus token to start the next game with. Being my first loss, I'll get one to start with next game.
At the end of your campaign, your total 'score' is the number of games played to complete the campaign. It'd be cool to get less than 12, but that may be a challenge from the looks of some of the scenarios coming up. But hey - nothing a nice glass of wine can't fix! 😉
