So, with Dragon Age: Veilwrath finally around the corner, I've started replaying the previous games.
I started with Dragon Age: Inquisition, which is boring as hell. 🥱 Didn't expect that. But then Hawke showed up, the main character from Dragon Age II, and I figured I should replay that one as well. I think I was the only person on earth that actually enjoyed that game back when it was released and yes, so far, so good.
What I really like is the scope: you're not trying to save the universe, or the world. Just yourself, basically. As it's always so weird when the world is about to end and you meet a stranger, and he asks you to find a book he lost, and you say "sure, let's put the apocalypse on hold for a while while I'm going on this fetch quest for you." This time, you are poor, you are a nobody, and so of course you grab any opportunity to make money. And then the story happens around you.
I don't think I'll be able to play the new Dragon Age on my computer. But I'm not sure it's going to be that good anyway. And I'll buy it eventually, when I've got a new computer a few years from now. For now I'll just go through these old games again. Maybe I'll even revisit Dragon Age: Origins, even though I've played that one probably ten times already. It's been years.
Never played it, but it looks cool.
I read some of the comics (spoiler: don't bother).
In the meanwhile I'm still struggling to finish Children of Morta (struggling to find the time for it, that is, because it's excellent and pure mass-slaying entertainment).
I am sooo old school, we just bought a Nintendo Switch
So the first one (Origins) is my favorite. I loved the music, story, character writing, battle system (it felt less gamey and more tactical). I replayed that one multiple times just to get some of the origin stories and try out new builds. The dwarf commoner story was so influential it actually made me consider roleplaying an evil character based on the way so many npcs in the gameworld mistreated me. That’s good writing. The human noble is still my favorite Origin story, though.
Part two was good I guess. Honestly, I enjoyed it too and understand what they were trying to achieve (a smaller story in scope while major events took place around you). However, I was not impressed with most of the characters like I was from the original, so there was not enough incentive for me to ever finish the game. I think with slightly more compelling companions I would have seen this one through.
Inquisition: ho hum. Boring and bland. Hero of the world on turn 1. Everyone defers to your character as lord and savior when you can barely swing a sword. Ugly, uninteresting characters. Who decided to change female characters in games and make them all ugly? Dragon age did that’s who. Everyone and everything was uninteresting and the game was endless… like an mmo but for single player. I wiped the game from my playstation and never looked back. Terrible. I don’t think I made it too far past the first or second chapter. I can’t remember anything but running around green hills and bashing everything that moves. Plus annoying characters trying to talk to me when I wished I could replace the entire writing team and start from scratch.
Sorry, was I rambling? I sincerely hope the new dragon age doesn’t suck as bad as I think it will. I honestly moved away from that a long time ago. DAO still provides me with good memories. I can leave it at that.
