I'm Dutch. I'm called "van der Meulen" (of the mill). Of course I like old windmills. So I was very excited to see the Windmill Back Playing Cards on Kickstarter. The creator is a fan as well: "I created the Windmill Back because I simply love the aesthetics of worn down windmills. I adore how powerful they look where they stand, usually alone and not in use."
Scrolling down I must admit I was a bit disappointed in the (to me) rather uninspired looking cards. Then I studied the mills again and I got really confused.
Please check the windmill pictured on the back of the cards. Three blades are facing one way. The one top left, however, is facing the other way. 🤔
Then we have the Ace of Spades, the most elaborately illustrated card. Where two blades are trying to go clockwise, the other two anti-clockwise. Eh?
I bet that's why it's not in use.
I think that this mangling of the defenceless worn down windmill is for artistic reasons. The symmetry on the Ace probably looks better to the artist. But I really have no idea what the meaning of that divergent blade on the back of the cards is. 🤷♂️
Artists... They reside in a sphere of their own, right? In the windmills of their mind.

Ah, you know, I stayed with the "Windmill" song in mind all week-end.
