It feels so good to have the urge to play again after weeks of just not having the energy. Thanks to the ST gang, my mind was eased knowing my love for gaming would return... and it has.
Having said that, time has not yet returned. 🤣 We still have lots of organizing to do from our move, and of course working again after months off requires a bit of time to get into that "workday rythym". This week has been a good week for that.
My routine last year (when I was able to work between lockdowns) was to head home after a busy day, make a tea and get something to the table before bed. I really enjoyed that routine. It winded me down perfectly after a work day.
This week, I've already had two nights of gaming after work. Unfortunately, neither night has allowed me to get a big game to the table (Scythe, Gloomhaven, Caverna, Brass Birmingham...). Time has been the issue mostly. And the uncertainty of whether or not my wife and I would watch a show or two before bed. 😄
So this week, the games that have hit the table for some "Solo Zen gaming" have been two that I haven't played in quite a while; Shadowrift & Arboretum using the Simple Solitaire Variant by Jamie Rufe.
Shadowrift has brought utter demise to the town this week... Twice! Once against the Fire Dragons and once against the Glaciens, whom I hadn't played against yet - and boy are they vicious! They froze the entire town! The nerve!!
Arboretum has been a nice surprise in the sense that I haven't played it a bunch (about a handful of times and mostly multiplayer). Now that I have a better understanding of the rules, I wanted to explore the solo variant in the BGG forum that I tried before. Plus the cards are so nice to look at as you buid your arboretum. 😀
I've played four solo games this week using the simple solitaire variant. I'll say one thing, it's very smooth and it's not a long play, so it's easy to sit down for at least a few games at a time. I think I'll do up another post about my thoughts with the game though... to keep the suspense high! 😎
All in all, I'm so happy to be gaming more regularly again. That being said, I'm really anxious to get one of the big guys to the table.
I'm hoping this Sunday will bring that opportunity. 🤔
I hope you can get one of your more beastly games out this Sunday, Derek. We know you're itching for a more colossal challenge. 🙂
